European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
