Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
