The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
