The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
