Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
